Treat a conversion factor as a fraction equal to 1. Orient it so the unwanted unit cancels and the wanted unit remains.

Key idea

Name quantities before calculating

Write what each number measures. A correct calculation with the wrong quantity or unit still misses the question.

Build a reliable method

For area, square the conversion factor; for volume, cube it. If 11 foot equals 1212 inches, then 11 square foot equals 144144 square inches.
