Treat a conversion factor as a fraction equal to 1. Orient it so the unwanted unit cancels and the wanted unit remains.
Key idea
Write what each number measures. A correct calculation with the wrong quantity or unit still misses the question.
For area, square the conversion factor; for volume, cube it. If foot equals inches, then square foot equals square inches.
